Device management is extremely important like you say above. One of the best ways to avoid mobile security issues is by staying up-to-date. I wrote an article of the differences between keeping up-to-date on Android vs iOS.
I read an article last week from an iPhone user in China. His firmware was push updated without his knowledge. And everything in China is controlled by the Government. The possibility of inserting Spyware / Malware is highly likely. His phone was erased, and reflashed properly after his return to US. He was a security consultant, so MOST users would not check the revision, as he did. “Hey, this is different, than when I went to dinner!”
